   From the Principal

The Te Kauwhata College community extends extends a very warm welcome to all who are making important decisions about which school to attend in the year 2011 or beyond. I am pleased to introduce you to a friendly, rural community, co-educational college and I welcome your interest in our school.  I invite your child to join us as a student of Te Kauwhata College. Our vision is to promote and celebrate achievement and we are proud of the success we have had in recent years. Our young people deserve the best that we can provide.

Founded in 1973, the College has a proud tradition in the provision of high-quality education in an environment where staff, students and parents have worked co-operatively together with the same goals in mind.  These goals encourage students to achieve standards of personal excellence, self discipline and responsibility.

We
offer a broad curriculum and our smaller class sizes allow for personal, individual attention.  I am sure that your child will find Te Kauwhata College an effective place, a school where all students get the best possible education, a school where students are given the opportunity to discover and develop their talents.

The success of the school depends on a positive and productive relationship between the school and its community.  I hope that your association with the College will be a pleasant and profitable one.

I encourage you to visit our College or to make contact with us. I enjoy interacting with families and discussing ways we can assist in providing for the needs of young people.

Our Values and Guiding Principles

We believe that people are what life is about. Life is lived in a community and we are designed to live life interdependently, not independently. Our school community is a place where learning to be a team member takes place. The staff, Board and parents work co-operatively as a team to provide the best possible learning environment to promote achievement.

Our school is one of the main places where children develop their views about life. Young minds are shaped for the future. It’s also a place where hundreds of lives intersect on a daily basis. For these reasons, we believe our school is a place where respect – for self, for others and for the world around us – is a fundamental value to be acknowledged, encouraged and celebrated.

We also recognise that Maori values are important in a community such as ours and individual and cultural identity is valued. People are of the greatest importance as recognised in our emphasis on teamwork.

He aha te mea nui?          What is the most important thing?

He tangata!                     It is people!

He tangata!                     It is people!

He tangata!                     It is people!

Integrity or honesty is a broadly acknowledged societal value and we believe the school has a vital role to play in expressing this in all its dealings.

Stationery

Stationery lists are available from the Student Centre.  These give the requirements for all the courses at the different year levels.  The Student Centre stocks only a basic range of stationery for emergency needs.

College Canteen

The College operates a canteen which is open every day before school, at interval and lunchtime.  A wide variety of food and drinks is available.

 The Library

Our modernised library is the centre where students gather information.  It is well resourced with a wide range of books covering all curriculum areas, as well as fiction, magazines and other recreational reading.  Students can also access the internet.  Index New Zealand, a colour photocopier and a fax are available to help students in their studies.

Health Matters

If you are unwell or have an accident that requires attention you must report to the Student Centre.  A trained staff member will assist you and if necessary contact home.

If you have an allergy or illness that requires you to take medication at school a small quantity of your supply should be kept at the Student Centre.

Leaving school during the day

If you have to leave school at any time during the day including lunchtime a note from home is required.  You must sign out at the Student Centre before you leave and sign back in on your return.

If you are being collected, it is requested that this is done in the foyer area of the College.  This is for your own safety and so that the school knows where you are in an emergency.

Transport

A majority of our students travel to the College by bus.  For the smooth operation of the buses please note the following points:

  • The driver is in complete charge of students during the journey.
  • If a student needs to travel on a bus, other than the one he or she uses regularly, a written request from home is required.
  • Eating or drinking on buses is not permitted.
  • Students are not permitted to leave a school bus in the township.
  • If you miss your bus do not wander off or hitch-hike.  You must report to the teacher on bus duty straight away and then come to the College Office, where you can ring and tell your parents where you are.

A staff member is appointed as the Bus Controller and any questions or problems should be directed to him/her.

Bus contact number:  Go Bus 07 828 7037.

For senior students who need to bring a vehicle to school, permission from the Deputy Principal is required.
